Communications Lead

Cook’s Ferry Indian Band

Merritt & Spences Bridge, British Columbia

The Cook’s Ferry Indian Band is a Nlaka’pamux government located in the scenic Thompson River Valley of British Columbia. With a strong connection to land, culture, and community well-being, the Band is committed to supporting its members through responsive programs, strong governance, and effective service delivery. Cook’s Ferry Indian Band is currently seeking a Communications Lead to support internal and external communications across the organization and community.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a professional who enjoys leading work, collaborating with others, and contributing thoughtfully at a leadership level. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Communications Lead is a member of the leadership team and plays an important role in supporting organizational alignment, community engagement, and effective information sharing.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the CAO, the Communications Lead is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of internal and external communications while also contributing to coordinated planning and prioritization. This includes managing social media channels and ensuring content is accurate, timely, and engaging.

You will draft and distribute weekly digital newsletters and prepare quarterly print summaries, along with writing media releases, internal updates, and community communications. The role supports the promotion of community events, engagement activities, and consultations, and coordinates media engagement where required.

As a member of the leadership team, the Communications Lead works closely with departments to gather updates, support consistent messaging, and ensure information flows effectively across the organization. You will develop and maintain an annual communications strategy and communications calendar to support clear planning, coordination, and delivery. In this role, you will be encouraged to take initiative, work independently, and bring forward thoughtful ideas and practical solutions that support organizational priorities.

You will remain results-focused while navigating ambiguity and change, and collaboration will be central to how you work. As part of the leadership team, you will contribute positively to an environment that values shared responsibility, open communication, and mutual support.

The Ideal Candidate

You bring a minimum of five years of progressive experience in communications, public relations, or a related field, with demonstrated responsibility for both planning and hands-on execution. Ideally, your experience includes working with First Nations, Indigenous organizations, or in community-focused, member-based communications environments.

You have strong writing and editing skills and are comfortable producing clear, accessible content for a variety of audiences. You are confident using digital tools such as Wix, Canva, Adobe products, and AI-based tools to support effective communications delivery. Experience working with media is considered an asset but is not required.

You enjoy leading work and collaborating with others, and you are comfortable taking ownership of your area with minimal oversight. You are organized, responsive, and professional in your approach, and you contribute constructively to leadership discussions and decision-making. Familiarity with Indigenous communities, governance environments, or community-based communications is considered a strong asset.

A valid driver’s licence is required, along with the ability to travel between Merritt and Spences Bridge. Some evening or weekend work may be required to support community events and engagement activities.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $80,000–$95,000, commensurate with education and experience. Cook’s Ferry Indian Band offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid holidays, a Christmas office closure, statutory holidays, health and dental coverage, and an employer-matched pension plan. Relocation assistance will be provided.
