Our client Columbia Containers is looking for an exceptional Director of Finance with outstanding accounting, reporting and business analytical experience and abilities, strong leadership and mentoring skills, solid business acumen, as well as process and systems savvy to join their team and play a key role with the business. This is both a strategic and very hands on role.

They serve their customers from their industry-leading location with their innovative transloading process. With over four decades of experience and refinements, Columbia Containers are proven leaders in the field. Reporting to the General Manager and working directly with operations you will lead a small accounting team and manage and be responsible for the company’s accounting and financial practices. You will also act as a business partner for operations.  You will be responsible for the financial and management reporting for Columbia Containers and CWEST, its wholly owned subsidiary, including preparation of board packages and reporting to its parent company. Areas of responsibility will include entity reporting, costing and profitability analysis (including business cases, modeling, KPIs and dashboards), budgeting and forecasting, contract management, payroll and benefits administration, risk management, systems, credit, AR & collections, treasury and cash management, and internal controls. You will use your strong relationship building skills to develop and maintain effective relationships with external parties as needed such as external accountants, lawyers, bankers, financial institutions, insurance underwriters, consultants and suppliers. Your drive for continuous improvement and knowledge and appreciation of operating metrics and business analytics will give you the opportunity to bring your knowledge and skills to bear as you support the organization and its leadership.

You are an outstanding accountant, leader and mentor. You have strong business acumen; you understand costs and drivers and thrive tying the numbers to the business.  You are solution focused and a methodical problem solver with a track record of success as an exceptional analytical mind and as someone who prioritizes well and executes on commitments. You are a strong and confident communicator with a high degree of professionalism and integrity and a sense of humour.  You have strong relationship building, influencing and negotiation skills. You know the right questions to ask to get the information the business needs.   You are a strong strategic thinker but are also comfortable rolling up your sleeves and delving into and dealing with details. You are recognized for your abilities to make sense of numbers and to communicate them articulately both to accountants and to non-accountants.

To be considered for this role you will have an accounting designation (CPA – CA, CGA, or CMA) and at least eight years of progressive and relevant experience.  You will have a minimum of two years experience at, at least a controller or similar level, leading and mentoring an accounting team with responsibility for full cycle accounting, payroll, reporting, budgeting, planning, forecasting and analysis. You have experience working / partnering with operations to help the business grow; logistics operations experience would be an asset. Your experience includes financial and management reporting, budgeting and planning, forecasting, variance analysis, modeling or costing, internal controls, A/R, process improvement and year-end audit.  Experience with bank credit agreements and covenant reporting would be beneficial. Your analytical abilities and advanced Excel skills are exceptional. You also have strong systems savvy and extensive experience manipulating data for reporting and analysis purposes.  Ideally you will have hands on Navision and Jet reports or similar system and report writing tool experience; at a minimum you have the aptitude and the ability to pick up on both and quickly to become an expert.  You must have the ability to travel occasionally within Canada.

The culture is one which encourages teamwork and collaboration in a professional business yet casual work environment.

If this sounds like a role you would thrive in, and you meet our client’s requirements, please submit your resume and cover letter outlining your fit and interest in the role directly to Trish Brydon of WMC at trishb@wmc.bc.ca.  We will be contacting only those whose skills and qualifications are deemed best matched for the position.  Thank-you in advance for your interest in this opportunity!
