The Client:

Cosmetica is a privately-held Canadian-owned business that has grown significantly to become a highly reputable and innovative contract manufacturer of prestige cosmetics for globally renowned beauty brands. Today the company has a highly-diversified workforce, employing about 1,500 people in its 270,000-square foot facility located in the east end of Toronto.

Every year Cosmetica creates hundreds of new and innovative formulations by partnering closely with clients to meet their highly specialized and exacting needs – from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of pieces per SKU – while juggling constantly changing variables and the need for speed to market.

Cosmetica continues to expand and evolve with a very aggressive growth strategy and plans to double sales in the next 5 years. In view of this, there is a need to attract the right new Vice President, Corporate Development to help coordinate and implement the internal changes necessary to meet the coming demands and successfully deliver on customer expectations.

The Role:

Reporting to the President, as a key member of the corporate leadership team, the core purpose of the Vice President, Corporate Development is to;

  • Work collaboratively with the President and Leadership team to develop and implement strategies to support the growth and development of Cosmetica,
  • Triage, drive, and co-ordinate material strategic initiatives within and across the organization
  •  Create greenfield functional areas that report to the Vice President of Corporate Development.

Initial Role Responsibilities:

  • Developing and maintaining a close and respectful relationship with the President, other members of the senior leadership team and all staff consistent Cosmetica’s entrepreneurial and innovation led culture.
  • Becoming an engaged and collaborative team member of the corporate leadership team 
  • As a greenfield role, the initial challenge of the VP Corporate Development is to create the Corporate Development function within the context of the Corporate vision and strategic plans. This includes responsibility for creation or upgrading of the functions / roles/ and mandates and, where appropriate recruitment of the staff for;  Triaging, prioritizing and driving strategic initiatives in conjunction with the Board, President, and management team;
    • The overall corporate development department;
    • Project management office;
    • Continuous improvement function;
    • Information Technology;
    • Risk management function; and,
    • Facilities management function.
  • Ensuring the use of appropriate integrated, world class technology and information systems are identified and successfully put in place;
  • Oversee and contribute to the expansion of Cosmetica’s facilities, ensuring always that physical space is capable of handling 5-year capacity requirements.

Experience, Knowledge, and Attributes Required for the Role:  

The role touches all aspects of the organization and requires an innovative operations leader and expert who has demonstrated experience in leading organizational change in a fast paced and growing manufacturing environment. In view of this candidates should have a well-rounded background and have worked cross-functionally at a senior level and have a track-record of creating and embedding new organizational service and solution functions, which will help the organization integrate cross-functionally while focusing on adding long-term value.

An ability to understand and work with the culture of the business and a leadership approach which engages the President, management, and staff in coordinating the setting of corporate goals, organizational change and improvements is also required.  It also requires a leader who can work collaboratively with the leadership and staff and help guide, focus, and support the organization in terms of implementing strategic initiatives, ensuring that such initiatives are successfully identified and implemented.  Key knowledge and experience requirements include demonstrable success in strategic planning, change management, project delivery, risk management, operations, business process improvement and information technology.

The role requires high energy, a results orientation, sense of urgency, a strong work ethic, and a team focused leadership approach which is “hands on”, yet empowering.  It also requires an approach which is solution and support oriented; collaborative, transparent and direct; and an ability to build strong respectful relationships and communicate effectively and persuasively with others.
