Executive Director, Financial Audits

The Office of the Auditor General (the OAG) serves the Legislative Assembly and the people of British Columbia by providing independent assessments and advice that enhance government accountability and performance. The work of the Office of the Auditor General spans all government ministries, as well as Crown corporations and other agencies. Reports resulting from assurance engagements are presented to the Legislative Assembly and are available for public scrutiny.

The Executive Director, Financial Audit implements the Office’s business goals under the direction of an Assistant Auditor General and contributes significantly to the Office’s strategic corporate agenda. The Executive Director is directly involved with assisting the Auditor General to fulfill the requirements of the Auditor General Act. The position is responsible for managing resources and meeting program deliverables within budget and time allotments.

You will be involved in:

  • Directing the planning, management and completion of several concurrent audits.
  • Ensuring financial audit activities comply with the Office framework of policies and procedures reflecting best professional practices and quality assurance standards.
  • Presenting findings and recommendations before the Public Accounts Committee of the Legislature, audit committees or governing boards of provincial public sector entities, and senior management within ministries and public sector entities.
  • Contributing to office-wide and portfolio strategic planning.
  • Providing input into Office-wide policy development.

For the recruitment process, we want seasoned accountants who possess a CPA designation combined with at least 5 years of relevant post qualification audit experience. Ideally the experience is in leading financial statement assurance engagements where interpretation and application of the Canadian Auditing Standards and accounting principles (under IFRS and PSAB financial reporting frameworks) are imperative. We are seeking professionals with a reputation for dealing with complex problems, for building effective relationships across a wide range of stakeholders, and known for maintaining high quality standards. Public sector methodology and related software (e.g., Caseware, CPEM, etc.) would be preferred as well as experience developing, delivering, and coordinating technical training sessions.

If you are at a stage in your career where you are ready to expand your audit expertise within a highly technical role and are excited at the prospect of living in Victoria, then please submit your resume and cover letter in confidence using the "Apply For This Position" link below.
