Director - Office of the Auditor General of BC - 37084

Director, Professional Practices – Financial Audits

The Office of the Auditor General (the OAG) serves the Legislative Assembly and the people of British Columbia by providing independent assessments and advice that enhance government accountability and performance. Authorities for the Office of the Auditor General are derived from the Auditor General Act. The work of the Office of the Auditor General spans all government ministries, as well as Crown corporations and other agencies, including the other Officers of the Legislative Assembly. Reports resulting from assurance engagements are presented to the Legislative Assembly and are available for public scrutiny.

In pursuit of their mandate, the OAG has added the role of Director, Professional Practices with focus on Financial Audits. Based out of downtown Victoria and reporting to the Executive Director of Professional Practices, the Director is responsible for the OAG’s System of Quality Control for financial audits in accordance with the Canadian Standards for Quality Control (CSQC1). This includes the development, implementation and monitoring of policies, practices and guidance relating to the conduct of financial audits to ensure the Office produces high quality audits in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standards.

The Director will be responsible for conducting inspection and completion of audit files as well as the development and implementation of financial audit methodology training to ensure consistency of financial audit reviews across OAG. As a specialist in this area, the Director will provide best practice recommendations on financial audits and advisory support to senior management team. The ability to accurately communicate findings and recommendations will be critical to success.

For the recruitment process, we are looking to connect with seasoned accountants who are backed by a CPA designation combined with at least 5 years of relevant post qualification audit experience. Ideally the experience is in leading financial statement assurance engagements where interpretation and application of the Canadian Auditing Standards and accounting principles (under IFRS and PSAB financial reporting frameworks) are imperative. We are seeking professionals with a reputation for dealing with complex problems, for building effective relationships across a wide range of stakeholders, and known for maintaining high quality standards. Experience using public sector methodology and related software (e.g., Caseware, CPEM, etc.) would be preferred as well as experience developing, delivering, and coordinating technical training sessions.

If you are at a stage in your career where you are ready to expand your audit expertise within a highly technical role and are excited at the prospect of living in Victoria, then please submit your resume and cover letter in confidence, online. For more information, please contact Kataneh Sherkat or Don Sherritt of WMC at (604)687-0391.
